EOFY sales surge: 71% of Australians plan to shop in 2025, driven by cost-of-living pressures

A recent survey conducted by PayPal Australia in collaboration with YouGov reveals a 23% rise in the number of Australians planning to participate in the End of Financial Year (EOFY) sales in June 2025.

The survey indicates that 71% of Australians intend to shop during this period, marking a substantial rise from 38% in 2024. It also highlights a growing trend of price-consciousness among Australians, with 85% of respondents stating they are more mindful of prices now compared to five years ago. This heightened awareness is further reflected in the 76% of Australians who report that cost-of-living pressures have made them more inclined to take advantage of sales events.

PayPal’s survey also sheds light on consumer attitudes towards full-price purchases. A notable 71% of Australians express a dislike for buying items at full price, with 51% feeling as though they are ‘losing money’ if they do not purchase items on sale.

The ‘Sandwich Generation’, which typically refers to individuals who are simultaneously caring for their children and ageing parents, shows the highest intent to shop during the EOFY sales, with 86% planning to participate. This is closely followed by Gen Z at 81% and Millennials at 82%.

Online shopping continues to be a preferred method for securing deals, with 71% of Australians believing that the best bargains are found online. Additionally, 69% of respondents report checking prices on their phones while shopping in-store, indicating a blend of digital and physical shopping experiences.

The survey identifies popular categories for EOFY shopping, with fashion and clothing leading at 42%, followed by electronics at 33%, health and beauty at 30%, and books, games, or hobbies at 25%.

Cathy Jamieson, PayPal Australia’s Head of Consumer Research, commented on the findings, stating: “This EOFY, Australians are proving that bargain-hunting is more than just a habit – it’s a strategy for navigating economic tensions, with three quarters of Australians saying that online sales events can help them manage cost of living pressures. While sales can be a great way to save money on things you need or already intend to buy, it’s important to plan purchases and set budgets to avoid impulse buys and overspending.”

The 2025 EOFY Sales research surveyed 1,044 Australians aged 18-75, with the sample weighted by age, gender, and location to ensure a representative cross-section of the population.
