Government to go live this weekend with social media ban ads

A national education campaign that includes TV, radio, print and socials will commence this Sunday (19 October) to prepare Australians for the new social media minimum age laws, coming into effect on 10 December.

From 10 December, social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, X, Facebook and YouTube will need to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 years of age from having a social media account.

The campaign, titled “For The Good Of”, will begin airing on Sunday night. Resources, which include a video, audio clip and print poster, developed by the eSafety Commissioner for schools, youth organisations and so on will be accessible online from 19 October.

Minister for Communications, Anika Wells is currently engaging with these platforms to discuss enforcement strategies.

Minister Wells stated, “The purpose of this law is clear: this is about creating cultural change so that young Australians have three more years to build real world connections and online resilience.” She noted, “This national education campaign will spread awareness about the changes coming for all Australian families.”

Wells also encouraged proactive family discussions, saying, “Parents and carers are encouraged to start having conversations about these news laws with their families to help them prepare.”
