Optus and Escabags collaborate to support domestic abuse survivors

Optus has struck a partnership with Escabags, an Australian charity, to provide free Escape Bags at selected Optus retail stores. This initiative is part of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Month and aims to offer practical support to individuals fleeing domestic abuse.
The Escape Bags, which contain personal care items, support resources, and an Optus SIM card, are designed to assist those in need. Stacy Jane, the founder of Escabags and a survivor of domestic abuse, highlighted the importance of communication in these situations. “From my experience, my phone was both my safety line and my greatest risk. It had software installed that tracked my every move, monitored my conversations, and left me feeling completely exposed,” Jane said.
The partnership is intended to provide a safe and discreet way for individuals to access necessary resources. Participating Optus stores will display a discreet Escabags window decal to indicate they are a safe space. The initiative is available to anyone, regardless of whether they are an Optus customer.
Jane elaborated on the significance of the partnership, stating, “I understood just how critical it was to change my number quickly and safely, and to have a way to connect with loved ones without being watched. That’s why this partnership with Optus is so important. It puts real, practical support into the hands of those who need it, in a safe environment.”
Optus is involved in several initiatives to support individuals facing vulnerability. These include the One Stop, One Story Hub and StandbyU Safety Shields. The company has also updated its Terms & Conditions to prevent the use of its services for harm and offers dedicated paid Domestic and Family Violence leave entitlements to its employees.
Anthony Shiner, Optus Chief Customer Officer, Consumer, commented on the partnership, saying,
“We know connection can be a lifeline, and with that comes serious responsibility particularly for telcos.” He added, “Our partnership with Escabags builds on the hard work of our teams to better support vulnerable Australians. Through the provision of Optus SIM cards and the backing support from our trauma-informed Specialist Care team we’re proud to offer help that’s discreet, local, and has the potential to change lives.”
Optus has a trauma-informed Specialist Care Team that has supported over 23,000 customers. This team is part of the company’s broader efforts to assist those facing difficult circumstances.
