Citroen to exit Australian market after 100 years, shifts focus to Peugeot
Citroen, the iconic French car brand, has announced it will cease availability to Australian customers by the end of this year.
The decision has been made to concentrate on its more successful sister brand, Peugeot. Citroen Australia will exclusively support vehicle maintenance and servicing requirements of Australian customers effective from 1st November 2024.
This marks the end of a local presence for the brand that spans over a century, with Citroen first entering the Australian market in 1923.
Despite its departure, the company will maintain its authorised Service Centres, where customers will continue to have access to factory-trained technicians, genuine parts, applicable service and recall campaigns, and diagnostic updates. There are currently 35 such centres nationally.
Citroen Australia said in a statement: “Our dedication to putting our customers at the centre of everything we do remains resolute. We know there will continue to be Citroën owners in Australia, with many Citroën vehicles still on the road, and our passionate Citroën Australia team and retailer network are committed to supporting the continued vehicle maintenance needs of our customers. We remain at your service and we’re ready to support the servicing needs of our customers via 35 authorised Service Centres across Australia.”
Citroen reportedly still plans to launch its plug-in hybrid variant in the C5 X range in the Australian market. Currently, Citroen has four models in Australia: The C3 hatchback, C4 hatch, C5 Aircross SUV, and C5 X wagon.
The brand sold only 14 vehicles in Australia in May 2024, a 42.3% drop year-on-year, and 21 in June, a 36.2% year-on-year drop. In contrast, Peugeot sold 255 cars in June 2024 alone.
