Mcdonald’s Australia brews up support for Paralympians with ‘Takeaway Baristas’ campaign
McDonald’s Australia has unveiled the final instalment of its three-part social content series for McCafé, titled ‘Takeaway Baristas’, as part of its Paralympic campaign by DDB Sydney.
The campaign is based on the assertion that Australia produces the best coffee and showcases McDonald’s support for para-athletes.
The fast-food giant conducted a nationwide search to find the best McCafé Baristas and sent them over 34,000 kilometres to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to provide Australian athletes with coffee. The ‘Takeaway Baristas’ series documents the journey of the four McCafé Baristas, their preparation for the Games, their interaction with the athletes in Paris, and their efforts to make the perfect cup of coffee.
The series features narration by triple Paralympian Don Elgin and includes challenges with silver medallist Michael Roeger, Ameera Lee, and Tristan Knowles. The series was released across TikTok, Meta, YouTube and 9Now from 15th August to 15th September.
“Us Aussies can barely function without a high-quality cup. So when we found out McCafé was heading to Paris to make coffee for our Paralympians, we couldn’t wait to tell their story,” said Tom Lawrence and Sam Raftl, DDB Sydney Associate Creative Directors.
The campaign was supported by a national press office profiling the baristas. It was created by DDB Sydney, with media handled by OMD and PR by Mango Communications. The production company for the series was Infinity Squared. DDB Sydney is part of DDB Worldwide, an Omnicom company named Network of the Year at the 2023 Cannes Lions.
“Partnering with Paralympics Australia to support our amazing para-athletes has been a huge highlight for us this year. Whilst we can’t take any credit for their amazing success, the series is a light-hearted, feel-good moment to show just how far we go at McCafé to make sure our athletes and their families get the same great-quality, barista made coffee they’re used to at home,” said Amanda Nakad, McDonald’s Australia Marketing Director.
