Professor Susan Dann honoured for social marketing achievements
Professor Susan Dann has been recognized as Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to business education through commercial marketing techniques to deliver positive social outcomes. The annual Queen’s Birthday weekend honours list is public recognition of the contributions of individuals to Australian society, and Professor Dann has been recognized by the Australian Government for contributions to the field of marketing.
Her award marks the recognition of the field of social marketing as a key influence in modern society, and Professor Dann’s contributions to the foundation of social marketing as a field of study in Australian University sector, and her ongoing engagement, predominantly through NFP directorships, with the practice of positive social change through marketing in the non-profit, health and government sectors.
Dr Susan Dann is the Professor of Marketing and National Head of the Peter Faber Business School at the Australian Catholic University, where she has been employed since 2010. Prior to joining ACU she held academic appointments at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Griffith University, James Cook University (JCU) Brisbane and the University of Queensland (UQ).
Her commitment to social marketing has been previously recognized by the Australian Association for Social Marketing as the Foundation President and as Foundation Director of the International Social Marketing Association (representing Australasia). Professor Dann established the first full semester length course on social marketing at Griffith University in 1994, later presenting this model at variety of institutions including the (then) University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Social Marketing.
Professor Dann’s contributions to learning and teaching include being Associate Dean Teaching and Learning at JCU Brisbane and being a key member of the Australian Business Dean’s Council’s Taskforce for the creation of threshold Marketing Learning Standards for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These standards establish social responsibility as a fundamental benchmark principle for marketing education in Australian Higher Education.
In 2004, Professor Dann authored the Queensland Office of the Premier and Cabinet’s “Insight and overview of social marketing” guide to social marketing practice for the Queensland State Government. This is document remains a touchstone for social marketing campaigns in South East Queensland to this day.
From 1999 to 2005, as Queensland State President, National Deputy President and Director of the Australian Marketing Institute Professor Dann established and chaired the Government Marketing Conference to draw together practitioners from industry, third sector and government to share best practice for using marketing in government agencies for social good.
Professor Dann has published across the management and marketing literature including publications in journals such as Social Marketing Quarterly, Gender Work and Organisation, Journal of Macromarketing, Journal of Product & Brand Management and Women in Management Review. Her work has ranged across criminology, entrepreneurship, HR, leadership, marketing for social good and productive aging.
